• The Primary Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 5 February, 6:00–8:30pm in the Atrium and Primary Classrooms. Formal presentations will begin at 6:30pm with most of the evening focussed on Primary School and Teacher presentations in classrooms. I hope you all can attend. • The Secondary Parent Information Evening will be held on Thursday 6 February, 6:00pm, in the Arts Centre Foyer (ACF) and The Terraces. Drinks and canapés will be served on the Terraces at 6:00pm, followed by informative discussions specific to your daughter’s year level starting at 6:30pm. I hope you all can attend. Please also do not forget the P and F AGM and Welcome drinks on Monday 24 February in the Arts Centre Foyer. The P and F welcomes all parents to attend and to become involved at whatever level they can manage given work and family constraints.

Unfortunately, our Dean of Academic Performance, Jo Butterworth, is not well and needs to take leave for approximately 6 months while she is undergoing treatment. Nicole Devlin, the current Dean of Studies, will take on Mrs Butterworth’s role; Mr Tom McCormick will take on the Acting Dean of Studies role and Mrs Louise Brown with take on the role of Acting Head of Faculty - Socio-Cultural Studies. This will take effect from Monday 3 February. Unfortunately, this will necessitate some rearrangement of classes and teachers as we adjust the timetable for the changes in staffing. Mrs Butterworth has said to me how proud she is to be a member of a school community which supports The Pony Tail project. We wish her well over the next few months.

We are proudly an Anglican School with our traditions being built upon the ethos of the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent. The Sisters began the school in 1895, so this year there is much to celebrate as we enter our 125th year of outstanding education.

We are a spiritual community that holds regular worship services which your child will attend. We have a beautiful chapel within our school grounds. There are many opportunities for families to attend special services throughout the year. At the beginning of the year we hold family services. It is desirable that students and their families attend these services. The services are great occasions where students can be baptised or be admitted to Holy Communion if you wish. Later in the school year, we will also be offering Confirmation for students from age 13.

Please be aware of some key dates and opportunities for our students and families are as follows:

In Term 1

Baptism and Admission to Holy Communion will take place in Term 1 for Years 7 and 8. Students are invited to participate in preparation for Baptism and/or Admission at the Years 7 and 8 Family Service on Tuesday 18 February, 6:30pm in the School Chapel. The Pre-Prep to Year 3 Twilight Family Service will be held on 25 March at 6:00pm. Families and their children are invited to attend this 125th Celebration Family Service.

In Term 2

Years 4-6 are invited to participate in preparation for Baptism and Admission to Holy Communion (Year 4s will all have in-class RVE lessons). The service will take place at the Years 4-6 Family Service on Wednesday 29 April, 6:00pm in the School Chapel. Further information will be communicated during this term.

Our particular focus will be on the Boarders being academically vital, culturally inclusive, community spirited, actively engaged and globally responsible. Central to this is the development of mutual understanding and respect in a supportive living and learning environment. We aim for the girls to learn from and about each other in a safe and inclusive environment where cliques are broken down and individuality is valued. One of the most enjoyable elements of Boarding life is developing essential skills beyond academics and include being involved in community building activities, life-skill sessions, fitness and well-being courses and encouraging every girl to make a positive contribution to the morale and social fabric of the Boarding House.

In the area of academics, the Boarders will enhance their personal learning repertoire by developing their work ethic, knowledge base, study skills, spirit of collegiality and ability to network academically. Our focus will also be on leadership development where we will learn to work in a team, communicate effectively with a range of people and learn to problem solve. We look forward to a positive year in Boarding for everyone and will continue to focus on kindness and gratitude.

Senior Subject Information Evening

On Thursday 6 February, 6:00-8:00pm all parents are invited to attend a Senior Subject Information Evening. The Years 11 and 12 presentations will be separated so that we can discuss the specific academic requirements for each year level. The presentations will be recorded and available in the Parental Portal on the day following. We will provide information and updates about the New QCE system, important study skills and ATAR predictions for the Year 12 students.

Assessment Planners

Years 10 to 12 students can access a 2020 Assessment Planner on their Year Level POD pages. All assignments and exams for Terms 1 to 4 are recorded so your daughters can begin to plan their study schedules. Effective study habits rely on your daughter’s capacity to prioritise her academic progress and allocate sufficient time for homework and study. Term 1 Exam Block schedules will be available in Week 3.

ATAR predictions – Year 12

Next week, we will be providing an ATAR prediction to each of the Year 12 students studying the ATAR pathway. The predictions have been calculated using the girls’ Units 1 and 2 results and the process specified by QTAC. The predictions provide a preliminary indication of the girls’ progress based on their formative Year 11 assessment. It is very important for the girls to be aware when they receive these predictions that they can change their ATAR significantly through their effort and application this year. I will be meeting with the girls this Friday during Academic Advising to discuss the predictions and their focus for Year 12.

Supervised Study Sessions

Supervised Study Sessions (SSS) will operate out of the senior library on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Each session runs from 5pm to 7:30pm, with students having the option of purchasing dinner from the Boarding House for $10 (served at approximately 6pm).

For students attending these sessions after an afternoon of sport, transport is available to and from Windsor Park. For those staying on after school to attend SSS, the senior library is open until 5pm prior to the commencement of the study sessions.

Parents who book their daughters in via Flexischools can feel comfortable knowing that their daughters are receiving academic support and are also interacting with peers in a physically and emotionally safe environment.

Dates for the sessions and when bookings open are below:

2020 Supervised Study Sessions

Term 1: 3 February – 26 March (except 19 February due to Interhouse Swimming)

Term 2: 27 April – 13 June

Term 3: 20 July – 10 September

Term 4: 12 October – 19 November (except for 13 October due to Speech Night)

To book, parents will need to log on to Flexischools and select ‘Supervised Study Sessions’. Bookings are limited to 25 participants each night and when a session is full no further bookings can be made. Bookings are essential and should be made in advance to ensure a place is available. If dinner is required, payment must be paid at the time of booking and this option selected in Flexischools. Please note, if you are booking dinner for your daughter and she has special dietary requirements can you please email Rosemarie Parisi (rparisi@stmargarets.qld.edu.au) with the date and dietary needs to ensure these are catered for.

During these sessions, girls work with tutors to organise a plan of study for the term. This involves looking at their assessment calendar and planning to ensure they are prepared for the next lesson and assessment. The main goal of SSS is to assist students to revise work covered so far and support and extend their understanding of learning from lessons in preparation for assessment.

SchoolTV is a new ongoing resource that is now available to our parents. Each edition will address a major topic with expert interviews, fact sheets, parent quiz, recommended apps, books and much more. SchoolTV aggregates information from many great resources such as BeyondBlue and ReachOut amongst others. SchoolTV provides a single stream of independent factual information that saves parents time and confusion of searching online across multiple sites for information.

Special Report: Parenting Styles - What type of parent are you?

There are so many different opinions offered on how best to parent. New parents will often have firm beliefs about how they wish to balance love and discipline, but this ideal often goes out the window when a toddler throws their first tantrum in the supermarket!

Raising children can bring parents and caregivers great joy despite many learning ‘on the job’ and growing into the role through experience and understanding. Children will always flourish in a warm and loving environment, supported by clear guidance.

In this Special Report, parents and caregivers can gain a greater understanding of the four defined parenting styles by taking part in the quiz. It can guide parents towards deciding which style they wish to adopt and the effects it may have on their children.

In the upcoming weeks I will meet with the new students at morning teas. This is as an opportunity for each of us to get to know one another. I look forward to the opportunity to meet parents at our Parent Information Night on Wednesday 5 February. Please check the POD for details about the evening.

Before and after school arrangements can become hectic, so I would encourage parents to familiarise themselves with our drop off and pick up procedures. Parents are encouraged to drop students in the Drop Off zone (topside of the Primary school gate) for them to walk into the Atrium. Students will wait in the Atrium, under teacher supervision, and move to their classes at 8:15am. As a school, we encourage the children to be independent throughout their school day. Therefore, we request that parents do not accompany their child to the classroom so that each child is responsible for organising herself.

In the afternoons, a teacher is on gate duty in Butler Street from Monday to Thursday until 3:40pm, and Friday until 3:30pm. Please encourage your daughter to look out for you so the teacher can supervise her as she moves to your car.

The 2-Minute Zone is a set down and collection point only. It is illegal to leave your car when parked in this area. Please note, there is a teacher on duty only at the Butler Street Pick Up Zone. We encourage parents of students in Years 1-6 not to park and walk into the school, but to meet your child outside. These arrangements are in place to help reduce the congestion at the school crossing.

Pre-Prep Parking

Four parking bays are allocated to Pre-Prep parents for drop off and pick up for a maximum of 10 minutes. We request that only Pre-Prep parents park in these bays (maximum of 10 minutes) with their permit on display in their car. Staff monitor these parks to ensure they are only used by cars displaying these permits. We encourage you to follow this process to ensure the safety of our Pre-Prep students.

Please note, the Pre-Prep parks may be used by all other parents between 9:00am - 2:00pm or after 3:00pm.

Music Camp

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp's Music is excited to once again offer the opportunity for girls in Years 7-12 to attend our biennial Music Camp! The Music Camp will take place this year on the weekend of Friday 21 to Sunday 23 February 2020 at Luther Heights Youth Camp. It is an expectation that all Years 7-12 girls who participate in Secondary school co-curricular music groups will attend the camp. Time will be spent rehearsing in music ensembles improving musical skills and participating in other fun activities. This will be an excellent opportunity for girls to not only learn new music repertoire within music ensembles, but also build relationships with other girls in the music program and the music staff. It will also be an opportunity to rehearse for upcoming performances such as Open Day. The cost to attend the camp is $230 with Flexischools now open to take bookings. Music Staff News

A very big welcome to new staff who will be joining us in 2020. We welcome Mr Alex McPherson who will be replacing Ms Eleanor Streatfeild during Semester 1 whilst Ms Streatfeild is away on leave. Mr McPherson has been teaching with the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium and is a regular performer with the Qld Pops Orchestra. We look forward to welcoming Mr McPherson to the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s Music team for Semester 1!

Private Music Lessons will start in Week 2

On Friday 31 January during lunchtime, students from Year 5-12 are asked to come to the Sister Helen Orchestra Room (SHOR) to meet their private music teacher and arrange a lesson time for Week 2. If a student is in a younger grade, or is unable to attend that day, the music teacher will contact parents/students directly to arrange a lesson time. A list will be up outside of SHOR with the name of each girl’s private music teacher. (It is not too late to enrol your daughter in private music lessons. An Application Form with terms and conditions is attached (PDF 184.8KB) should you wish to do this. Private Music lessons will start from Week 2.

There have been many requests from parents for lesson times to occur outside of school time. Whilst every effort will be made to accommodate these requests, it may not always be possible. Older students in the Secondary school are always given first preference to these time slots. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Music Ensemble Rehearsals will start in Week 2

Rehearsals for most Music ensembles will commence from Week 2 and we are looking forward to having many girls involved! Ensemble lists have been placed on the String, Band and Choral POD pages. The 2020 Ensemble Rehearsal Timetable is also available on the POD page.

Choirs: All choirs will begin rehearsals in Week 2 (with the exception of Volare which will commence in Week 3). Please note that all choirs (with the exception of Volare and Exultate) are non-auditioned. There is no need to sign up and all girls are welcome to participate. If students are interested in joining Volare or Exultate and have not yet auditioned, please contact the Music Department in order to arrange a time. (Extra auditions for Volare will occur after the Elevarsi rehearsal on Monday 3 February at 4:30pm).

String Ensembles: All String Ensembles will commence rehearsals in Week 2. Please check the Strings POD page for ensemble lists. If students are interested in participating and have not yet auditioned, please contact the Music Department in order to arrange an audition time.

Band Ensembles: All Band Ensembles will commence rehearsals in Week 2. Please check the Bands POD page for ensemble lists. If students are interested in participating and have not yet auditioned, please contact the Music Department in order to arrange an audition time.

Rock Bands: Rock Band lists will be published by the end of Week 1 on the Bands POD page with rehearsals commencing in Week 2.

Music Support Group

The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s Music Support Group is a committee of dedicated parents who meet regularly to support the girls who participate in the School’s Music Program. The Music Support Group organises and assists with refreshments at school concerts and fundraises to purchase a range of instruments/equipment to enhance the Department’s resources. The first meeting for 2020 will be on Tuesday 11 February at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room (second floor of Chaseley). Parents from both the Primary and Secondary Schools are welcome to attend.

These traits are ones I hope all girls embody in their sporting endeavours. I wish all girls every success in achieving their goals and dreams for 2020. For many, it will be representing °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s in their chosen sports or perhaps representing the district, region or even Queensland. For others, it will be ‘having a go’, participating and enjoying being active. Whatever goals our students may have there will undoubtedly be highs and lows and that is what makes playing sport so exciting and exhilarating!

Sports Trials

National All Schools Athletics Championships

Congratulations to the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s Junior Athletics team who competed at the National All Schools Athletics Championships on 9 December at the Perth Athletics Centre. The team comprised of Tshia Nielsen (7, 2019), Tayden Tomich (8, 2019), Genevieve Heather (8, 2019), Maicey Lynch (9, 2019) and Kayla Newberry (9, 2019) who performed well to finish 7th against 14 other schools from across Australia. Special thanks to Head Coach, Mr Eric Brown who guided this team to achieve a solid result.

Swimming Camp

On Wednesday 22 January, 73 girls from Years 7 to 12 travelled to The Southport School on the Gold Coast to participate in the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s Swim Camp. The camp led by Head Coach, Kevin Sargent and Coordinator, Ms Phoebe Mawer provided all participants an opportunity to develop their swimming technique and fitness through various swimming sessions, including one with Churchie, fitness classes involving Yoga, Pilates, HITT and a final session involving open water swimming and beach flag sprints. Other activities included a captain-led team scavenger hunt by Elke Howes and Sophie Leggett, a trip to the movies, beach barbecue and a day at Wet‘n’Wild which all helped build teamwork and strong bonds between girls across all year levels.

Special thanks goes to all parents who helped with the beach barbecue on Friday 22 January and additional thanks to staff and coaching members, who gave their time to support the squad throughout the week.

Isabella Harte (Year 9) who won gold in the 3000m at the All Schools National Athletics Championships in December.

Chelsea Johnson (Year 10) who won gold at the National Water Polo Championships with her team. This is the 4th consecutive National Championship Chelsea has attended, well done!

Tayden Tomich (Year 9), Brogan Tomich (Year 8) and Kayla Newberry (Year 10) who have qualified for the Australian Heptathlon Championships in February.

Donations through the Scholarship Fund continue to support families within our community affected by environmental disasters and those who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience a °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp's education.

This year, we are trying something a little bit different... As you might have noted in the 125 Year Calendar of Events in the last issue of the Flyer magazine, on Thursday 19 March 2020, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s will host its inaugural Giving Day! Our Chair of Foundation, Kylie Lamprecht, looks forward to sharing further details of the day at the Parent Information Evenings next week.

I know that like me, the recent bushfires and drought that have impacted much of Australia have touched a nerve in us all. It has been comforting to witness the solidarity that has emerged in response for our fire and drought affected communities. We know that you understand the importance of supporting others who are doing it tough, and we ask that you also keep °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s work alive in 2020 through your participation in giving.

Every member of the community can play a role in creating a life-changing educational experience for our girls, as we have done together now for 125 years.

We also have an action-packed year of 125 Year Anniversary events and activities planned to bring our school community together, including a very special °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s 125 Year Women’s Luncheon on Friday 13 March 2020.

We look forward to seeing you at these events throughout the year, and working with you to achieve great things for °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s in 2020!

NOTICE is given that the Annual General Meeting of the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s P&F Association Inc. is to be held on Monday 24 February 2020 in the Arts Centre Foyer, 6:30pm.

NOMINATION FOR POSITION

Any one member of the P&F shall be at liberty to nominate any other member to serve as an officer or other member of the Management Committee.

If you are interested in joining the P&F Association, all positions of the Management Committee will be declared vacant at the Annual General Meeting and a new committee for 2020 will be elected.

Nominations can be made by downloading and completing this Nomination for Position form (PDF 75.6KB). All nomination forms must be returned to P&F@stmargarets.qld.edu.au or via School Reception by Friday 14 February 2020.

In celebration of our 125-year Anniversary, you are warmly invited to join us at the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp's Women's Luncheon. This special anniversary event is a wonderful opportunity for all women of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êapp’s, past, present and future to come together.

Location: The Greek Club, 29 Edmonstone Street, South Brisbane
